چکیده
In this thesis recent research in the area of optical packet switching is reviewed, the main problems in the area are identified and a possible solution to some of the problems, optical burst switching, is studied in more detail. Optical burst switching and the JET protocol are studied by means of a simulation program specially built for this purpose. Optical packet networks are networks, where the switching operations are performed optically, and the data remains in optical domain through the transmission. There have already been several implementations of optical packet switching in laboratory environment, but commercial solutions are not expected within a few next years. This is due to the infancy of optical devices. Although the networks and the components have developed rapidly, there are still many unsolved questions. The main problems at the moment are the lack of optical random access memory and very high switching rates needed. A few solutions that try to overcome these problems, and still offer the benefits of optical packet switching, have been proposed. One interesting alternative is optical burst switching. In the empirical part of the thesis the use of the JET protocol in optical burst switching network was studied. In contrast to earlier research, in this work the performance of JET protocol was studied in networks without wavelength conversion. As a result it was found that with relatively small number of buffers a performance that is comparable to that of a wavelength converted version can be achieved. Delay Line Configurations in Optical Burst Switching with JET Protocol
Optical burst switching networks have received a lot of attention in the research community in the recent years. The JET protocol, first proposed by Qiao and Yoo in 1997 in [YQ97a, YJQ97], is used for resource allocation in these networks. Up to the present, the JET protocol has been studied in networks that use wavelength conversion [YQ97b, GDSB01a]. In this paper the JET protocol is discussed...
متن کاملAll-Optical Packet Switching Network based on Optical Code Processing
This work introduces a significant improvement for optical packet switching network based on OC processing. The key point of this method is the generalization of the optical label switching concept to forward optical packet without label swapping and O/E/O procedure. Our proposed method simplifies the design of switch devices in optical domain and packet forwarding process which speeds up packe...
متن کاملDemonstration of optical packet switching using optical-label switching technologies
This paper discusses optical-label switching and an experimental demonstration of high-speed all-optical packet switching with all-optical label-swapping capabilities. The subcarrier optical-label content was optically extracted and compared against the forwarding table, which induced packet forwarding as well as label-swapping decisions. The alloptical label processing technique was immune fro...
متن کاملOverview of optical packet switching
Optical packet switching has been researched for about two decades, but it has not been deployed in commercial networks yet. Nonetheless, the research on optical packet switching continues as it promises to perform better than electronic hardware. We report on the established results of optical packet switching, and examine the reasons for its current state.
متن کاملThe Designs of a Scalable Optical Packet Switching Architecture
This paper proposes a new switching architecture to be used in all optical packet switching networks. The proposed switch is derived from an original 2 × 2 two-stage multi-buffer switched delay line based optical switching node, known as an M-Quadro node. By incorporating bypass lines into the M-Quadro architecture and employing a novel switch control strategy, the optical packet switching node...
